RSS is a special type of web access that provides you with a way to keep up to date on changing content on web pages.
PPM application views are an example of web pages with content that can change regularly. You can subscribe to RSS feeds in PPM application custom views. For example, an RSS feed from the global Tasks application allows you to see the changes to tasks in the Task view without directly logging into PPM.
When you subscribe to an RSS feed, you add the address of the feed to an RSS reader and that reader lets you know when content in the application view changes.
Note: RSS feeds are limited to the first 100 items in a view, and can have a delay of a few seconds after a view has been updated.
To use an RSS feed from PPM, you must provide authentication (your log on information). Your RSS reader will prompt you for this information when you subscribe to the feed. This protects the data from access by someone who does not have log on privileges. It also requires you to use a reader that supports basic HTTP authentication.
For more information about subscribing to an RSS Feed, see Subscribing to an RSS Feed.
PPM provides a second RSS capability called permalinks. Your ability to create a permalink depends on your PPM administrator. The administrator can enable or disable the ability to create permalinks. This ability is granted by enterprise, for everyone or no one. It cannot be enabled for individual users.
An RSS permalink allows you to receive an RSS feed using
a reader that does not support authentication (this includes many web-based
readers). A permalink also allows non-PPM users (individuals who do not
have log on access to PPM) to access data in the RSS permalink, so for example, you
can share that data with others in your company.
You can see how often a permalink you created is access by clicking the
RSS icon. One option will show the last date and time a permalink was
accessed (when you create a link, you access it).
This is useful if you share the URL for the link with others.
You can quickly determine if the link is being access by anyone else.
For more information about creating permalinks, see Creating an RSS Permalink.
Global PPM applications that support custom views also support RSS:
Dynamic applications also support RSS:
You must be able to access an application in order to subscribe to an RSS feed or create a permalink from that application. If you do not see one of the tabs for an application listed above, the tab may be hidden or you may not have permission to use the application. For general information about global applications, see Using Global Tabs.
