Resource Types Overview

A resource type defines a general grouping of resources. For example, you might create a resource type called 'Development' that could be used to group all the enterprise users and external resources who are developers.

Resource types are used for planning and estimating of workspaces. When project managers and others are planning workspaces, they specify what kinds of resource types the workspace will require, and how many hours of each resource type. For example, a development workspace might involve 200 hours of the 'Development' resource type.

Resource types can be assigned internal and external billing rates. Internal rates are used for calculating workspace and task costs. External rates are used for calculating revenue. These resource type-level rates provide defaults for resources (enterprise users and external resources) that are assigned to the resource type. You can override the resource type rates at the individual resource level if desired.

For best planning and estimating results, each team member (enterprise user or external resource) should be assigned to a resource type. You can do this when you create the user or external resource, or by editing the user or external resource after they have been added. The resource type is then used for workspace planning in the Capacity Planner and Resource Allocation applications. Resource type billing rates are used for calculating internal costs of workspaces and tasks, and estimating billable revenue.

Note: A user or external resource can be assigned to only one resource type at a time. If you assign a user or external resource to a resource type, they will automatically be unassigned from any previously assigned resource type.
