Changing a Custom Field Type
Important:
If you change the field type of an existing custom field, you may lose
or change existing data.
In certain cases, when you edit an existing custom field
you can change the field type. You are limited to changing the field to a similar
type of field (you cannot change a numeric field to a text field, for
example), but even changing similar types risks losing existing data.
You cannot change a Date Difference
field to any other type of field.
For example:
- If you change a field
from a pick list to a text field, you lose any existing choices from the
pick list that you have already gathered. When you view the item that
includes that custom field, the field will be empty.
- If you change a decimal
field to an integer, the existing data remains in decimal format, but
PPM will only display the field as an integer. In addition, if you save
an item with the integer displayed, the integer will overwrite the existing
decimal value in the database.
- If you change a Hyperlink
text field to any other type of field, your hypertext data will be lost.
