About Lag and Lead Time

When setting up links between tasks, you can specify whether any lag or lead time is built into the dependency.

Lag Time

Lag is the period of delay between tasks linked with a dependency. For example, two tasks are linked with a Finish to Start dependency with a lag of 1 day. The second task will start 1 day after the first task finishes. (Note: Lag time takes weekends and non-working days into account. If there is a weekend between the finish of the first and start of the second task, the second task appears to start after 3 days.)

Lead Time

Lead time is an overlap between tasks linked with a dependency, and can be used to specify that a successor task can start when its predecessor task is part finished. For example, if two tasks are linked with a Finish to Start dependency with a lead time of 2 day, then the second task will start 2 days before the first task finishes.

Enter lead time for a task by typing a negative number in the Lag text box of the Task Details window.

Set up lag and lead time when creating or editing a task, or in the Gantt chart Task Dependency window, accessed by clicking a dependency link between tasks in the Gantt chart:

For more information on dependencies, see the Task Dependencies Overview.
