Adding a Milestone Task in the Task List

A milestone is a task that identifies a key event in the schedule. Typically, a milestone would not be assigned to any team members or have an actual task associated with it. Instead, milestones represent significant points such as the start date for a number of tasks, or the date a particular workspace phase finishes.

Note: Milestones do not impact or change the percent complete (% complete) of a schedule. Milestones are reference points marking major events in a workspace and have a duration of 0. They are not included when percent complete is calculated.

To Add a Milestone Task in the Task List:

Set the task Duration to 0 or blank (when saved, the duration will be 0).
A black diamond indicates that the task is a milestone task.

Where you do this depends on how you are adding or editing the task:

In the Task List—Use inline edit to make a task a milestone directly in the list.
Double-click on the Duration field and type 0 to make the task a milestone task.
Using the Add Task pane—In the Duration field, type 0 and save the task to make the task a milestone.
