Updating Tasks in the Task List Update Pane

The Task List displays tasks for a project in hierarchical (outline) view and gives project managers the ability to easily edit tasks in-place. It also allows project members to update their individual tasks.

Note: Updating a task is not the same as editing a task. Changes to fields in the Update Pane are not edits. For information about the difference between updating and editing, see Task Edit and Task Update.

To Update a Task in the Update Pane:

  1. In your project, on the Project Menu, click Tasks and Task List.
    The Task List displays.
  2. With the task selected:
  3. Click Update on the Task List toolbar
    or
  4. Right-click to open the Actions menu and Update Task.
  5. The Update pane opens on the right side of the screen with the following fields:
  6. Hours For—If you are updating the task for yourself, your name displays in the Hours For list. If you are a project manager you may be able to specify an external resource for whom you are updating the task. Most users only see their name in the Hours For list.
  7. Hours Worked—Type the number of hours worked on the task.
Entering hours worked can have the following impacts:
  8. If your organization uses both Tasks and Timesheets, any change you make to the Total Hours Worked is reflected immediately on your timesheet as Work to Date but is not reflected in task Actual Work until your timesheet is submitted and approved (if applicable).
  9. If your organization tracks tasks using ETC, ETC is automatically decremented by the number of hours entered in Total Hours Worked
  10. Hours Worked on—Type the date of the work, or select a date from the calendar.
  11. % Completeor ETC—Your enterprise configuration determines which of these fields is enabled.
  12. % Complete—If % Complete is enabled, type a number between 1 and 100 that represents the percentage of work remaining on the task. Note: Changing the % Complete value may also change the Actual Start or Actual Finish date for the task. For details, see About Task Percent Complete.
  13. ETC—If ETC is enabled, type a number representing the amount of hours of work remaining on the task.
  14. Actual Start—If you know the date that work first started on the task, type a date for Actual Start or select a date from the calendar.
  15. Actual Finish—If you know the date that work finished on the task, type a date for Actual Finish or select a date from the calendar.
  16. Update Notes—Type any notes you want to include in the update (for example, a brief description of the work done).
Note: To start a new line in the Update Notes field (or in any long text field in a pane), press Ctrl+Enter. Pressing Enter while in the Update pane will attempt to save your update.
  17. Click Save to save the update.
