Adding a Task in the Gantt Chart

Project managers can add tasks directly into the Gantt Chart. For information about other ways to add tasks in PPM, see Adding a Task.

You must check out the task schedule in order to add, edit, and delete tasks in the Gantt Chart. For more information about checking the schedule out, see Checking Out the Task Schedule for Editing.

TO add A TASK IN THE GANTT CHART:

  1. Navigate to the workspace to which you want to add the summary task.
You need to check the schedule out before you can add a summary task.
  2. Click Tasks in the Workspace Menu, then click Check Out Schedule.
If the task schedule is already checked out, a Check In Schedule link displays on the Tasks menu, and a Check In button displays at the top of the List and Outline views. For more information, see Checking Out the Task Schedule for Editing.
  3. In the Tasks area of the Workspace Menu, click Gantt Chart.
The Gantt Chart displays in a new window.
  4. Do one of the following in the Task list to the left of the Gantt chart:
  5. Click an empty row
  6. Click the Task number of an existing Task, and then click Insert () on the Gantt Chart toolbar.
A new task is added above the existing task.
  1. Type a name for the task in the Task column and then press Enter. The task is added to the Gantt chart with a default duration of 1 day.
  2. To specify a different task duration, type a number in the Duration text box.
Note: A duration of 0 creates a milestone task.
  3. To specify task start and end dates, do one of the following:
  1. To specify the percentage of the task that is complete, in the task details section above the Gantt chart, type a number in the % Complete text box. Note: if your organization uses ETC to track task progress the % Complete field is not editable.
  2. To assign a resource to the task, in the task details section at the top of the Gantt chart, double-click the Resource text box.
Select a resource from the pop-up list of team members. For more information, see Assigning Team Members to Tasks.
  3. To save changes made in the task details section, press Enter.
  4. To specify additional details about the task, such as the task type, constraints, and whether the task is effort-driven, click the Edit Task Details button on the Gantt Chart toolbar, and follow the procedure Editing a Task in the Gantt Chart.

Note: The default task type is Fixed Duration (non-effort driven). If you have not changed this when adding a task in the Task List Add pane or the Create New Task window, this remains the default task type. If you change the type while adding a task, your change becomes the default task type until you change it again. For more information, see Task Types Overview.
  5. To add more tasks, repeat this procedure from Step 4.
  6. To save your changes, close the Gantt Chart and check in the schedule.

Note: If a project has been synchronized with a Microsoft Project file using ProjectTransit, you cannot add, edit, or delete a task in PPM. For more information about ProjectTransit, see ProjectTransit Overview.
